How to Stay Physically and Mentally Healthy During Winter

Writer's picture: Let's Live A LifeLet's Live A Life

Winter can be a magical time of year, with snow-covered landscapes and cozy evenings by the fire. However, it also brings challenges for both physical and mental health, especially in colder countries where shorter days and freezing temperatures can take a toll. Whether you're battling seasonal affective disorder (SAD), struggling to stay active, or just trying to maintain your overall well-being, here are some tips to help you stay healthy during the winter months.

How to Stay Physically and Mentally Healthy During Winter

Stay Physically Active

While this guide aims to help folks who live in countries with long winters such as Canada, United States, Scandinavia and Germany etc., this can be particularly helpful to those who are immigrating or planning to immigrate to these countries from warm climates such as India, Philippines, Spain or Bangladesh etc.

As an immigrant myself who had moved to Canada almost 20 (in 2007) years ago from South Asia (my wife Marina is from Spain, another warm country), I am frequently asked about the ways to live a healthy life in Canada during the winter months when temperature hoovers around -10 degrees Celsius for days and sometimes -30 degrees.

Well, it is entirely possible when we take necessary steps. It is not very difficult and we have been doing it while raising our two beautiful daughters Irene and Sofia.

This will be a series where I will elaborate on the many issues we face, how to prepare for them and how to remedy them.

Let's begin!

1. Stay Physically Active

When it’s cold and dark outside, it’s tempting to stay indoors and hibernate. However, staying physically active is crucial for your health and mood.

  • Embrace Outdoor Activities: Bundle up and enjoy winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating. Even a simple walk in the snow can be invigorating.

  • Create an Indoor Routine: If outdoor activities aren’t an option, invest in home workout equipment or follow online exercise classes. Yoga, pilates, or bodyweight strength training can be done in the comfort of your home.

  • Stay Consistent: Schedule your workouts as part of your daily routine. Even 20-30 minutes of movement can make a big difference.

2. Prioritize Mental Health

The winter months can lead to feelings of sadness, fatigue, or isolation, especially in regions with limited daylight. Here’s how to take care of your mental health:

  • Get Enough Sunlight: Lack of sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiency and affect your mood. Try to spend time outside during daylight hours or sit near windows to soak up as much natural light as possible.

  • Consider a Light Therapy Lamp: If sunlight is scarce, use a light therapy box designed to mimic natural sunlight. These can help combat symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

  • Practice Mindfulness and Gratitude: Activities like journaling, meditation, or practicing gratitude can help you stay grounded and positive during darker days.

  • Stay Connected: Reach out to friends and family regularly, even if it’s through video calls or messages. Social interactions can help combat feelings of loneliness.

Eat a Nourishing Winter Diet

3. Eat a Nourishing Winter Diet

What you eat plays a significant role in how you feel, both physically and mentally. During winter, focus on foods that provide energy and boost your immune system.

  • Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can reduce your thirst, but staying hydrated is just as important in winter as in summer. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon are great options.

  • Boost Your Immune System: Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins C and E, such as citrus fruits, spinach, and broccoli. Garlic, ginger, and turmeric are also excellent for immune support.

  • Enjoy Comfort Foods Mindfully: Indulge in winter favorites like soups, stews, and casseroles, but balance them with whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

4. Support Your Immune System

Winter is prime time for colds and flu, so it’s essential to keep your immune system strong.

  • Get Enough Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to allow your body to recharge and fight off illness.

  • Wash Your Hands Frequently: This simple habit can prevent the spread of germs and reduce your risk of getting sick.

  • Take Vitamin D: With limited sunlight in winter, consider a vitamin D supplement (consult your doctor first) to maintain healthy bones and a strong immune system.

Find Ways to Enjoy the Season

5. Find Ways to Enjoy the Season

Winter doesn’t have to feel like a burden. Embrace its unique charm and look for activities that bring you joy.

  • Practice Hygge: This Danish concept of coziness encourages creating a warm and inviting atmosphere at home. Light candles, curl up with a good book, or enjoy a hot drink by the fire.

  • Try Something New: Use the winter months as an opportunity to try a new hobby, like knitting, baking, or painting.

  • Celebrate Seasonal Traditions: Whether it’s decorating for the holidays, building a snowman, or enjoying a winter hike, find joy in the season’s traditions.

6. Dress for the Weather

Staying warm and dry is key to enjoying winter. Invest in quality winter clothing:

  • Layer Up: Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and waterproof outer layers to stay warm and dry.

  • Protect Your Extremities: Don’t forget hats, gloves, and warm socks to keep your head, hands, and feet cozy.

  • Choose the Right Footwear: Wear insulated, waterproof boots to prevent slips and keep your feet warm.

7. Be Kind to Yourself

Winter can be challenging, and it’s okay to have days when you feel less motivated or energetic. The key is to listen to your body and give yourself grace.

  • Set Realistic Goals: Don’t pressure yourself to accomplish everything. Focus on small, achievable goals.

  • Take Breaks: Give yourself permission to rest and recharge when needed.

  • Seek Professional Help When Needed: If you’re struggling with persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional.
