About the Event
Experience the captivating sounds of Kurdish music at Bayê Bakûr (Northern Breeze), a concert featuring Kurdish-Canadian Kamānche player, composer, and singer Shahriyar Jamshidi and talented Kurdish female vocalist Hezil. This special event takes place on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. at the Canadian Music Centre's Chalmers Performance Space in Toronto. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
Jamshidi will present a colorful collection of Nomad Kurdish music from the Zagros and Ararat mountain regions, showcasing diverse musical themes shaped by the region's rich cultural tapestry. The performance will include solo kamānche pieces, Dengbêjî (storytelling) vocals, and Strāns (songs).
Hezil, a Kurdish singer from Northern Kurdistan (Bakûr), will join Jamshidi to celebrate Kurdish women's artistry. She will perform the complex Dengbêjî vocal form, traditionally a male musical domain.
Shahriyar Jamshidi is known for his masterful kamānche improvisations and dedication to preserving and sharing Kurdish musical heritage. He has performed with renowned organizations such as the Canadian Opera Company and the Windsor and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras.
